The photographs were taken on a phone camera (iPhone) and are deliberately unedited: no post-production and no AI. The garden looks the way it looks.
The task
The shapes of the plot are unusual on almost every side (irregular), with no straight line to tie the garden to. The zones and the routes had to be laid out so that the paths run by themselves rather than across the middle of the lawn.

Zones set by how often they are used
We first mapped where the family walks every day and where they come to sit. The everyday routes are short and straight; the places to sit are off them.

Large groups of planting instead of scatter
Shrubs and young trees run in large blocks. The garden reads as a whole rather than as a collection of single plants, and blocks like these need less care.

Two places to sit, one enclosed and one open
One is tucked into the planting, for an evening for two. The other opens onto the lawn, for guests and children.

The mature trees stayed where they were
The tree in the middle of the garden gives shade and volume from day one. The new planting is gathered around what was already growing, not in place of it.
We finished this garden this summer: the planting is still young and will fill out. Every year we will update the portfolio to show how the garden changes.
